Description
The collection includes:
- The Belonging Project assignment is to create a short video interview for The Belonging Project, asking an interview subject three questions that are simple, and yet sure to elicit powerful and highly personal views on this universal dimension of being human.
- The Culture Project invites learners to explore the meaning of culture by filming someone responding to three provocative questions about the role of culture in everyday life. With this assignment, students examine how culture is both universal and personal, and investigate ways culture both expresses our individuality, and is a catalyst to see ourselves in others.
- With the Creativity Project, participants explore what it means to be creative by conducting a three-question interview that takes a broad look at this dimension of being human. The assignment inspires students to consider that creative thinking is a life skill, and explore if this is a universal attribute of humanity.
- The Listening Project invites learners to investigate how listening is different from hearing, and why listening is not just a passive use of our senses, but an active engagement with the world around us. With the Art of Listening, students conduct a three-question interview and elicit insights on how the art of listening can improve daily life and society in general.
- The Authenticity Project is a springboard to step back and really consider what the characteristics are of someone or something that is authentic. With this project, students will interview someone they feel has a meaningful view on this matter. We’ll provide three questions that should spark thoughtful observations that contribute to clarity about how people can discern what is legitimate and true.
- With The Changemaker Project, students identify someone they believe embodies the definition of a changemaker, and film their responses to three thought-provoking questions…and become changemakers themselves! There are millions of people who every day spend time trying to better some aspect of society. Why? And how? What do they learn about themselves and life in the process of seeking to improve some circumstance? FTL Filmmakers find out!
The lesson includes:
- Selection of inspiring, thought-provoking proprietary FTL videos about our shared human condition and the unique way we each express that.
- Guidelines and tutorials on selecting an interview subject, interviewing, editing, and submitting videos for publication on the Flip the Lens YouTube channel.
- Structured templates to conduct short, three-question interviews with someone they consider interesting about a specific theme related to our shared humanity and unique differences.
- Parent/Teacher guide that provides the likely time length required for each exercise and suggestions on ways to implement Projects with learners.
By creating video interviews for The Belonging, Creativity, Culture, Listening, Authenticity, and Changemaker Projects, learners develop Social Intelligence skills like collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, empathy, listening, rapport-building, as well as hard skills like storytelling and digital content creation.
The interviews should be done in person. This ensures that learners have the full, authentic experience of connecting with another person in real time, which offers a different way of relating than online.
When the piece has been completed, submit it for publication on our YouTube channel. Submissions require review by parent/teacher to ensure directions were followed and that requirements are met. We provide a checklist of elements each video needs to have to be considered for publication.
